DATA STORAGE AND RECOVERY

Threats to an Organization’s Data

1. Issues related to ensuring data integrity and availability

As we all know, for any business or organization, the most important resource is data. Storing data and ensuring its safety is always the top concern for businesses and organizations.

Data is stored on storage devices, however, device failure due to technical issues is highly likely to occur.

Events that can cause damage or loss of data may happen to any organization, such as:

  • Data destroyed by viruses

  • Data accidentally/intentionally deleted or damaged due to subjective/intentional human actions

  • Data corrupted due to being stored on damaged hard drive sectors

  • Hard drive failure

  • Incidents such as fire, flooding, or even disasters causing damage to physical storage areas

Currently, hacker attacks on server infrastructure and user computers are becoming increasingly aggressive. Most notably, ransomware attacks are becoming more common. Data of businesses and organizations will be encrypted, and hackers demand ransom to unlock the data. Even if the ransom is paid, there is still no guarantee that the data can be restored…

2. Issues related to protecting the legality and ownership of data

What happens when information about projects, customers, payroll data, company policies… of an organization is leaked?

Anyone can easily imagine the harm caused by the leakage of important data to unintended parties, especially when it falls into the hands of malicious actors or business competitors.

This raises questions that need to be resolved:

  • Which data is classified as particularly important, which belongs to departments, and which is personal data?

  • Who has ownership over particularly important data, who can read it, and who is allowed to send it to others?

  • Through which channels can the data be transmitted: USB, Local network, Email, Cloud…

A data leak can be very costly in terms of both expenses and time to handle, whether intentional or not.

Solutions to address these issues
Data backup and recovery solutions

To prevent risks of data loss due to destruction or encryption, businesses need to implement data backup solutions. So, what is data backup? And what types of backups exist?

Data backup is the process of storing all necessary data in a safer location. Backed-up data can be quickly restored to support business operations when an incident occurs.

There are two types of data backup: On-site Backup and Off-site Backup.

On-site Backup: is a data backup solution in which the location storing the backup data is within the same system as the devices being backed up. The advantage of this backup method is fast backup and restore speed. However, it has a significant drawback: hackers can attack the place where backup data is stored, and it provides no protection in the event of natural disasters or fires.

Off-site Backup: is a data backup solution in which the location storing the backup data is at a different place from the devices being backed up. The advantage of this method is the higher safety level for the backed-up data. However, the downside is that the backup and recovery speed depends on the connection between the workplace and the location storing the backup copies.

Backup Strategy

One of the most effective rules to handle any scenario is the 3-2-1 backup rule. This approach helps users answer two important questions: First, how many backup files should I have, and second, where should those backups be stored?

The 3-2-1 rule has become a common concept. The 3-2-1 backup rule means:

  • Have at least three copies of your data
  • Store the copies in two different locations
  • Keep one copy off-site

Cost-efficient Data Storage Solution – NAS Netgear

Organizations can easily store, manage, and share information within the organization and access data anytime, anywhere.

ReadyNAS optimizes file sharing across most operating system platforms such as Windows (CIFS/SMB), Linux (NFS), MAC (AFP), Server (iSCSI), iOS, Android,…

With its unlimited Snapshot feature, customers can store multiple versions of data to prevent risks such as accidental deletion or restoring data that was modified incorrectly.

Supports RAID disk management technology (RAID Level: 0,1,5,6,10), making data protection and recovery more convenient.

Features such as real-time virus prevention and encryption provide a comprehensive and solid integrated solution for data and backups.

Data synchronization technology allows synchronizing all data or the entire NAS storage cabinet to another NAS device in case of disasters such as fire or natural calamities occurring at a data center.

3. Zecurion DLP Data Loss Prevention Solution

  • Comprehensive control: Controls all data leakage channels such as email, USB, … to minimize data breach risks and ensure compliance with established regulations.
  • Flexible policies: Can be configured with several data transmission channels (email, images, USB, …) or all transmission channels. Uses content detection to preview and prevent data theft violations.
  • File content analysis: With automatic detection for more than 500 file formats based on internal structure instead of file extensions. Can also identify encrypted files and extract files with multiple compression layers – no data escapes analysis.
